Locals' Tongariro Crossing

The Department of Conservation is organising a special Tongariro Crossing on Sunday 21 February 1993 aimed at attracting locals who may not have been able to participate during the department's summer programme. Bus transport will depart from the Turangi Information Centre at 8.30am and return about

5.30pm. There is a cost of $10. Participants need to bring lunch and a drink, sun protection as well as warm clothes and sturdy boots suitable for Tongariro's often harsh alpine environment. The Tongariro Crossing is 17km and takes approximately five to seven hours walking.

It can be a very long day and above average fitness is needed. Often referred to as 'the best one day walk in New Zealand', the Tongariro Crossing is popular with tourists and locals alike. Many people from overscas come to Tongariro National Park especially to do the crossing.
