Plan for Raetihi
Mayor Garrick Workman told the crowd at Saturday's centennial celebrations that he had a plan in mind to lift Raetihi's commercial centre. He said those returning to Raetihi for the celebrations could easily be saddened by the state of the main street, but that the town still had much potential. "You may think, by what you see here, that
the town is dying. Wqll I can assure you it is not." He would seek the support of the Waimarino Community Board for his plan, which he did not elaborate on further. Prime Minister Jim Bolger said the challenges facing people in the next 100 years need the same kind effort as those of Raetihi's first 100 years. "History is a great
teacher. This community is only here because people were prepared to pull together and work together," he said. The future challenges required that same effort. He said the development of the district would have been daunting to all but the bravest of hearts, who faced a rugged country and an inhospitable climate. "Those people deserve our thanks for their courage and commitment."
