Squash courts open February

Saturday 27 February has been set for the official opening of the new Ohakune Squash Courts. The builders are currently laying the wooden court floors and working on other finishing touches. A number of volunteers have been painting the interior over recent weeks with several parts already having received their final coat. The suspended interior ceiling is due to be completed today (Tuesday). Committee members are currently finalising furnishings and are confident of meeting the 27 February deadline. A great deal of interest has been expressed to committee members regarding membership. Fees can be paid now with those joining before opening date exempt from the $15 nomination fee which will apply after February. Membership rates are: single $80, couple $150, family $190, junior $20. Also available in 1993 only are discounted five year subs (19931997): adult $350, couple $650, family $800. A limited number of 10 Gold Key life membership places are also available at $1000. People who are able to take the longer term memberships will greatly assist the club by reduc-

ing the amount that needs to be borrowed. The cost of building the complex is $430,000 plus GST. The committee now has either spent or has in cash or kind a total of $356,000 including the $70,000 recently allocated from the Lotteries Commission. A further $74,000 is still needed and although a guarantor is available to allow borrowing of the balance the committee are working hard to reduce this figure. Several groups and individuals have pledged support and it is hoped that those offers will come to fruition in the next few weeks prior to opening. The major fundraising currently in progress is a donors* board which will be a feature of the lounge area. Individuals, families, businesses, sports and other groups will hopefully take part and assist in this. Donation values are restricted to $50, $100, $200 and $500 and contributions made in this way will be visible forever within the club lounge. Donations received recently include: Island Bay Squash Club $50, Manst Squash Club Whakatane $50, Manurewa Squash club $100, Levin Squash Club $100, Ruapehu College student council $500.
