Christmas too dear?

'Is the price of Christmas too high?' was the winning speaker, Keitha Joumeaux's topic at the recent prepared speech contest of the Ruapehu Branch International Training in Communication (I.T.C.). Judges for the contest which was held on Thursday 27 November, were Brendon Mickleson, Margaret Platt, and Justine Pilgrim, all from Taihape. Commenting on the speeches, the judges praised the high standard, good variety and the entertaining contest. All contestants spoke confidently, were well pre-

pared and had a good use of language. Second in the competition was Jean Windle who spoke on crime; third was Jo Robinson - 'Making Changes'. Keitha will compete in the Council 8 Contest in April. A debate was held against the Taihape club, with the topic: "are TV advertisements an insult to our intelligence?" Taihape Club took the negative and narrowly convinced the judge John Compton they are not. Future meetings will include a meeting to celebrate the centenaxy of New Zealand's Women's Suffrage, early in 1993.
