Raetihi sections auctioned, 1893
From page 1 from the latter place. The sections sold are near the confluence of the Mangateterahi (sic) stream with the Mangawhero river. The land is level and partly open, the forest on the bush portion being rimu and birch. The conditions of sale having been read, which provided for a deposit of one-fifth of the purchase money on the fall of the hammer and the balance within 30 day, with £1 Crown grant fee, Mr Baker then answered various questions. He announced that the bush had been felled from the sections, and over some of the adjoining lands, because it was so difficult to fell bush on quarter-acre sections, and also that grass was required for the settlers. The sale then commenced, and from the very outset there was the keenest competition. In the Raetihi township four blocks in all were sold, containing 80 quarter-acre sections, the total price realised being £1347, or an average of sixteen guineas per section, far and away above what was expected - nearly trouble (sic) the upset price. The sections fetched from £7 to £60, the upsets having been
from £7 10s to £5. The principal puyers (sic) were: - Messrs A. Nathan, H . McDonald, W.A.Floyd, R .J.Smith, F.Cole, T Snelling, J.J.Lindwart, and a number of others. Raetihi, it may be stated, will be the township for the Waimarino, Wanganui United, and three of the Marton special settlements. In the Village of Ohakune, forty quarteracre sections were quit-
ted, at a total of £239, or an average of £6 per section. The sections averaged from £3 to £20 the upset prices being from £2 10s to £4 10s per acre. It is worthy of note that every section was disposed of, and we understand that one section, at any rate, was sold at an advance before the buyers left the room. The principal buyers were Messrs W.F. Hurley, F.W.Cribb, A . R a y n e 1 1 , W.T.Bo water, W.Taylor,
and a number of others. Ohakune will be the township for the other part of the Wanganui United and Clifton No.l special associations. The total sale realised £1586, and may be taken in every way as distinctly satisfactory. FOOTNOTE: The land sale referred to was held on 9 February, so we assume that while the article was published a week later, it was written the day after, which would account for the referrence to "yesterday".
