Yesl It's th Ruapehu Bulletin!
You've picked up a copy of the Ruapehu Bulletin, which for this special weekfor Raetihi, has a wraparound section modelled on the area's early 'local paper' the Waimarino County Call.
The following article is an extract from "The Yeoman", a Wanganui newspaper of the time, dated 16 Feburary 1893. iltmhatwoufr CROWN LANDS SALE Townships of Makotuku (Raetihi) and Ohakune At the Survey Office yesterday (Thursday) afternoon, Mr J H Baker, Commissioner of Crown Lands held a most satisfactory auction sale of land in the townships of Makotuku and Ohakune, there being at least 150 persons present. Most of the buyers came from the Waimarino, amongst the principal ones being those who know the locality thoroughly and recognise the fact that it is shortly to become an important inland centre. In his introductory remarks, Mr Baker stated that as there already existed a Makotuku township it had been found necessary to change the title to Raetihi, the native name of the block on the other side of the river. The township of Raetihi (as it will in future be called) forms a portion of the Waimarino Block and is situated on the west bank of the Makotuku River, on the main road between Karioi and Pipiriki, being distant about 18 miles frorn the latter place. The land is level and covered with mixed bush, consisting of rimu, matai, tawa, pinau, maire and the usual undergrowth, while the soil is good throughout. The township ' of Ohakune is situated on the main road between Karioi and Pipiriki and is distant about 24 miles Tum to page 2
