Locals' time on Ruapehu
The locals who say "we'd love to come but we're too busy" are being especially catered for by Ohakune 's rangers who have organised a 'local's weekend' of guided trips. As part of the Tongariro National Park Summer Nature Programme, Ohakune conservation officers have set aside a weekend, 23 & 24 January, to run two of the most popular trips, especially for the locals. "We always hear from local people, especially business people, that they would love to come on some of the guided trips but are too busy through the summer holidays," said Rob
McCallum. "Well now's their chance." Staff will run, weather permitting, the Crater Lake walk on Saturday 23 January, followed by another favourite activity, the venison barbecue. The deer for the barbecues are mostly shot by ranger John Luff, who gives up precious free time to hunt deer in the national park for the event, held at the Mangawhero Camp. On Sunday 24 January another popular walk, to Lake Surprise, west of the Ohakune Mountain Road, is planned. While the weekend' s activities have been planned for locals, anyone can take part, said Mr McCallum.
