OHAKUNE DISTRICT COURT

The following charges were heard by Judge Richard Watson in the Ohakune District Court last Thursday. Police Sergeant Bob Evans of Ohakune appeared for the prosecution. Assault Emmanuel Haitana, 27, unemployed of Raetihi appeared for sentence on charges of: assault on a female; assault on a police constable; threatening to kill a police constable and intentional damage to a police vehicle. Corrective training Michael Anthony Manihera, 17, unemployed of Raetihi appeared for sentence on a charge of assaulting his father on 29 September 1992. Theft of Coal Mervyn Lindsay Fielding, 32, self employed of Ohakune, appeared of a charge of theft of coal valued at $100 from the New Zealand Defence Department on 27 November 1992. Intent to injure Dallas Clayton Elers, 24, shearer of Raetihi appeared on a charge of intent to injure on 11 December 1992. He was remanded without plea till 1 1 February. Counsel: Paul Brown. Community service Barney George Henare, 26, unemployed of Ohakune, appeared on charges of cultivating cannabis and receiving a chainsaw valued at $400 between 19 August and 10 December 1992. Henare pleaded guilty to both charges and was convicted and sentenced to 35 hours community service on the charge of cultivating cannabis and 35 hours community service on the charge of receiving a chainsaw. Both charges are to be served concurrently. Counsel: Brian Mason. Threatening to kill Francis Lee Mareikura, 40, finishing operator of Ohakune, appeared on a charge of assault and threatening to kill on 20 November. Mareikura pleaded guilty and was remanded till 11 February for a probation officers report and sentence. Counsel: Paul Brown. Careless use of a motor vehicle Dennis John Hawira, 20, unemployed of Raetihi, appeared on a charge of excess blood alcohol on 3 October 1992 and careless use of a motor vehicle in Ohakune on the same date.

On the charge of excess blood alcohol he pleaded guilty and was convicted and fined $800, court costs $95 and disqualified from driving for 8 months. On the charge of careless use of a motor vehicle he pleaded guilty and was convicted and fined $100, court costs $95. Counsel: Paul Brown. Excess blood alcohol Mark Anthony Evans, 29 of Rangataua, appeared on a charge of excess blood alcohol on 4 October. Evans pleaded not guilty and was remanded until 8 March for a defended hearing. Counsel: Brian Mason. False pretences Trevor Peter Condon, shearer of Raetihi, appeared for sentence on a charge of false pretences over the unemployment benefit. He was convicted and discharged. Community service Pierre Ian Todd, 18, unemployed of Raetihi, appeared for sentence on charges of: car conversion; breaking into a motor vehicle; intentional damage to a window; driving with excess breath alcohol of 500/100 and driving while disqualified. The following community service sentences were imposed and are to be served concurrently. On the charge of car conversion 200 hours and disqualified from driving for 9 months from 6 March 1993; on the charge of breaking into a motor vehicle 200 hours and disqualified from driving for 6 months from 6 March 1993; on the charge of driving with excess breath alcohol 200 hours, and on the charge of driving while disqualified 200 hours and disqualified from driving for 9 months. On the charge of intentional damage to a window he was convicted and fined $100 court costs $95. Counsel: Paul Brown.
