Pony tetrathlon
The Ohakune Pony Club ran a successful tetrathlon on Sunday 6 December and would like to thank everyone who helped. Helpers were too numerous to mention all by name but special mention must be made of Ted and Maureen Warren on who's property the event was run and Eileen and Phil Gotlieb and Jill Evans, the scorers, as this was a mammoth task. Suzanne Dickens and Miss Elaine KnoxThompson, two of Pony Club's National Instructors, also helped on the day. The diverse nature of the event takes the emphasis off great riding ability and several horses were ridden twice during the day. The weather was kinder than on the Saturday for the Waimarino gymkhana and because of the massive amount of rain on the Friday the club was lucky to hold the day at all. There were 29 starters in three age groups representing four teams and three individuals. Running was the first event with participants running the cross country course they would later ride. This was a new course including a number of temporary jumps and it rode very well with no eliminations but few completing within the optimum time. At noon everyone
traveiled to Waiouru to the Armoured Division Gunnery Wing for air rifle shooting and then to the swimming pool to swim as far as possible in three or four minutes, depending on age. This later stage was described by one competitor as a refreshing finish. At the end of the day the team's average member scores were calculated with the highest average being the winning team. Rosettes were presented to all teams. Although it is primarily a team event individuals may compete in one or more events and in future the club would like to encourage more people to take part including nonriding children and adults.
