Young Raetihi hero rewarded

A certificate of appreciation from the police was presented to a schoolboy on Friday at a Raetihi School assembly. Ten-year-old Thomas Pui received the certificate for saving school friend Connie Cooper from serious injury in an accident in August. Thomas saw Connie fall across the path of a reversing car and then get pinned underneath it. He ran across the road to tell the driver of the car, who did not realise Connie was underneath it, then to get Connie' s mother, and finally called the emergency services. Raetihi School principal Neil Hammond said Thomas was "cool, cairn and collected during the incident - he really saved Connie 's life". Local traffic policeman Ian Harrison said he was really proud of Thomas. Thomas said he was surprised by the award and he would put it up in the family lounge.
