Summer mountain adventures
A summer adventure is about to begin on the slopes of Mt Ruapehu. Forget Whakapapa's groomed and manicured look, its smooth curves are about to reveal a rugged side. This land of contrasts and contradiction, fire and ice is preparing to be exposed! Energetic visitors to Tongariro National Park can join experienced guides from Ruapehu Alpine Lifts (RAL) for a memorable climb to Crater Lakes. Guided trips for groups of up to 26 leave every day until 2 February 1993. You need to be reasonably fit to
enjoy this trip but two chairlift rides certainly reduces the puff of climbing from the Top O' The Bruce. (1630m) to Knoll Ridge (2000m) where the walk to Crater Lake gets underway. On a clear summer' s day the crisp alpine air invigorates even the oldest soul. But mountain weather can change dramatically in a very short space of time and visitors need to be prepared for all weather. Dress for the day, but make sure you have extra clothing and wet weather gear in your day pack-sun cream and sunglasses are a must. Three hours is allowed
for the climb up, with plenty of stops en route to enjoy the breathtaking scenery. Before reaching Crater Lake groups usually stop for lunch at Dome Shelter (2650m). Here you can restore some energy, listen to the silence and discover some of the mountains' secrets. Crater Lake is spectacular - an acid pool surrounded by snow and ice - a truly impressive sight. But for some, the best part of the day is still to come. Take an extra plastic bag (a change of clothes is a good idea too) and get ready to slide feet first down the
Whakapapanui Glacier and back to Knoll Ridge - pure fun and a lot easier than walking! Of course not everyone wants to climb up the mountain. A ride on the chairlifts give sightseers of all ages an opportunity to enjoy the special quality of summer alpine magic, the dramatic rock formations full of colour and energy, a constant reminder of the mountain' s volcanic nature. The chairlifts will also transport you back down the mountain. But an easy hour-and-a-half walk downhill from Knoll Ridge takes you on an interesting and
well marked trail back to the carpark. Information panels at regular intervals provide details on the geology, history and volcanic features of this very special mountain. Summer on Mt Ruapehu is an opportunity for families and friends to get outdoors and have fun together - enjoy the park, pack a picnic or just play in the snow. But keen skiers shouldn't put their wax away just yet-summer skiing is definitely a bonus and it's just around the comer. Note: Reservations for the Crater Lake trip are essential.
