Ruapehu promoted at Air Expo

The Summer Ruapehu tourist promotion campaign organisers returned from a well received promotional display at the Air Expo in Auckland, held over the weekend of 21-22 November 1992 where over 200,000 people attended. The campaign is co ordinated by Ruapehu District Council marketing manager Bruce Rollinson. The display at the Air Expo aimed to promote the strength, attractions and activities of the Ruapehu District. A mountain bike and raft formed part of the display which provided an addi-

tional attraction to the stand. A competition was also held where two summer holiday packages to the Ruapehu District were given away as prizes, attracting about 1500 entries. Participants were asked to name the two National Parks in the Ruapehu District which also featured as part of the display. Most participants knew of the Tongariro National Park, but were surprised to learn that some of the most scenic areas of the Whanganui National Park were also part of the

Ruapehu District. Over 7500 'Summer Ruapehu 'brochures, produced in conjunction with the Ruapehu Bulletin, were handed out to visitors at the Air Expo. The aim was to raise awareness that the Ruapehu District is also an exciting summer holiday destination. Operators who were part of the campaign and who assisted with the display had the opportunity to field questions which specifically related to their own operation. Mr Rollinson said while it may be difficult to measure the direct ben^efits of attending the Air

Expo it was certainly successful as an awareness exercise for people who in many cases did not recognise the Ruapehu District as a separate tourism entity. By continually improving and being innovative with domestic marketing campaigns such the as Summer and Ski Ruapehu products, recognition of the district will substantially improve, said Mr Rollinson. Part of the display that travelled to the Air Expo will now go on tour around the Ruapehu District.
