Ruapehu lacks toxic dump
Ruapehu councillors swiftly passed the buck on the toxic waste problem to the regional council last Friday, at least for the meantime. Councillor John Compton suggested the council offer an amnesty to people storing toxic waste material, and that the council stockpile it until a method of disposal is worked out. He said that way the council would at least be aware of the size of the problem. The district had no designated place to dump toxic wastes, said Cr Stuart Shaw. Other councillors felt a bigger problem could be created if the council were inundated with material. The regional council could then put pressure on the district council to deal with its stockpile. The council heard that a regional council policy was six to 12 months away. They agreed to invite Ruapehu representative, Don Middleton, to their February meeting so he could keep them up to date on the issue.
