Assault with chair charge

• A 48-year old male was remanded in custody to appear in court in Wanganui yesterday on a charge of assault with a weapon following a serious domestic assault on Thursday- Friday. The incident started from an argument between ihe couple which developed into a fight. The man used a chair to beat the woman, breaking the chair in the process. He then attacked her with another chair, breaking that one also. Police sergeant Bob Evans said the attack was very violent, with the victim suffering severe bruising. • On Saturday a hunter's vehicle was broken into and a fully mounted western saddle and a shotgun stolen. The man left the vehicle at the Blyth Track car park at about 5-6pm. The thief forced the door of the vehicle. • On Thursday night/Friday morning windows of four businesses in Raetihi were broken by vandals. Elders Pastoral, Harris Tansey & Harvey, the Raetihi picture theatre and Dekker Machinery suffered smashed windows, though the offenders were disturbed by the Raetihi volunteer night patrol before anything was taken, said Sgt Bob Evans.

Waiouru Police File by ChrisScales • We have had a lot of complaints about stray and roaming dogs around the housing areas. Please refer these matters to either the Ruapehu District Council or the local dog ranger, unless the complaint is one of sheep worrying or an attack by a dog. We do not uplift stray dogs, nor catch them. • It is important that all firearm owners be aware of the new changes occurring in the firearm laws. The red firearm licence will soon be obso- | lete and will be replaced. If you are the holder of a firearm, over the next five years you will be required to apply for a new 10-year licence. The owners of military style semi-automatics will be required to apply for these licences first. If you are one of these people, you should apply for the licence before April next year. For the six months after April, all collectors and pistol owners will be notified. All these people will have to apply for an endorsement to their li-

cence within a year after this date. It is important that if you have moved, you should send us a change of address notification as soon as possible, to enable us to send you all the right information regarding these law changes. Without the new licence, you won't be able to buy ammunition. From now until December next year, the Police have a firearm amnesty. If you have any unwanted or unlawfully owned firearms, please hand them in. Help us to help you protect all members of the public by getting these matters attended to. Pat Tasker is attending a briefing this week about the new firearm law changes and we should then be able to answer most queries about the new laws. • We still want more information about any cannabis plantations or drug activity in our area. Please keep the information coming. • Inquiries into Pat Tasker's bungy jump have been completed and a video of the event has

dispelled any doubts. Pat now tells us that he is going to submit the video to Phillip Alpers for the next TV series of Heroes! • Peter Thomas should now be the best dressed policeman around Waiouru after having to undergo a training lesson on how to attach his buttons to his uniform. This, after having been a Constable for about 5 months! (Wasn't too hard, was it Pete). • Have a safe week.
