Town planners call for community comment
"If there is no community input, there is no point in preparing a new district scheme," new Ruapehu District planner Jeff Page / told Ruapehu South Business Association
members at their meeting last week. Mr Page and fellow resource planner Jane White were at the meeting to start
the consultation process for the revision of Ruapehu's six district schemes. Mr Page said a district scheme is a community document and should reflect the aspirations of the community. He said at present the council was working with six different schemes involving numerous land use zones and that it was going to be a long job to put together a scheme which melded them together to suit the new Resource Management Act. "The emphasis now is not on specifying what you can and can't do - it is Turn to page 4

"It is essential for us to know what the aspirations of your community are while we work on this document." He said they would be visiting the Waimarino on a regular basis to make themselves available to local residents to discuss their concerns. He said they were to prepare a discussion doc-
ument, covering the various issues involved, before Christmas. In the new year, until March, they will be consulting with the community, followed by a nine-month period in which the draft district scheme will be prepared. Community input will still be welcome through this stage, said Mr Page. In early 1994 the draft would be ready to go to council. It would be open for public submission for 40 days, then cross submissions for a further 20 days.
