Mayor gets change of deputy

Ruapehu councillors voted 10-3 to elect Taumarunui councillor Graeme Cosford as deputy mayor last Friday, ousting first-term deputy Weston Kirton. In nominating Graeme Cosford, mayor Garrick Workman said he would publicly justify his move to replace Weston Kirton if forced to do so. He said he needed someone who supported him and someone he could trust "Graeme Cosford has

the necessary qualities," said Mr Workman. "While he is not a 'yesman' he's got the necessary qualities. He is honest and straightforward." Cr Joe Murphy nominated Weston Kirton for deputy mayor, saying the mayor and general manager had both been given a second term to consolidate their positions and that Cr Kirton deserved the same. "Weston has carried out his duties with due diligence," said Mr

Murphy. "Differences of opinion and debate can be healthy." "Weston Kirton has gone on another track to yourself but still he's done a good job," Stuart Shaw told the mayor in seconding Kirton's nomination. Cr Kirton told the council he was aware that he had spoken against his fellow councillors and "perhaps the mayor at times" but that he believed it was his democratic right to have his

say. The most public difference between Workman and Kirton has been over the future of the Taumarunui Hospital and health services. Mr Workman has favoured the establishment of a down-town health care centre, while Mr Kirton has sought to fight the government and the Waikato Area Health Board over the planned closure. Later in the meeting Kirton and Workman

clashed over the formation of a community health advocate group. Mr Kirton used the debate to highlight his wish to fight tc retain the status quo in Taumarunui health care. Mayor Workman curtly reminded Kirton that there was nothing in the report calling for the group that said fighting to retain the present health services was not possible. He said the group, once formed, would decide which options it would support.
