The emphasis for this Saturday's Round Ruapehu Ride is on personal challenge, said organiser Warrick Funnell. "We know it's a long way, 160 kilometres, but if a rider gets as far as Rangipo that's still a pretty good achievement," said Warrick. "Even to say you've cycled the Desert Road would be something." He was answering the question "should I attempt the ride even though I haven't stuck to Ron Cheatley's training programme. "It's not a race - it's a ride for fun and for the challenge of completing the course." Last year about 100 riders set off on the event, and already this year the Wanganui Cycle Club, who are organising the event, have about 150 entries. They hope to get about 100 late entries on the day to bring the numbers to about 250. Once again the Raetihi PTA are manning the nine drink stops on the Bar ride at night As a warm-up to Saturday's ride the Wanganui Cycle Club is running a roller ride at Cleches at the Ohakune Hotel on Friday night. Riders race in pairs to cover 1200 metres, riding normal bikes set up on special rollers. Both sets of rollers are hooked up to the same dial showing distance covered. "This is a fantastic spectator event and heaps of fun," said organiser Warrick Funnell. "And it is totally safe, we have handlers for each rider to look after them." "We want to see heaps of locals there to take part and to spur on the riders."
course, spaced out at 16kilometre intervals. They will be selling energy food and drink and puncture repair kits. "They did a marvellous job last year and it looks like theyTl do an even better job this time around," said Warrick. The Ohakune Raetihi Rotary Club are providing the marshalling manpower, also for the second time. Highlighting the noncompetitive nature of the ride is the way prizes will be allocated. Spot prizes will be the norm, with some top goodies up for grabs. About 45 prizes, from a $10 hat to a $900 mountain bike will be given away. Payment of the entry fee also provides for a complementary meal, put on by the Ohakune Hotel. The rider's packs, given to all paying participants, will be full of goodies also, said Warrick. ■ "They will be as good as any given at any other ride."
