Civilians make Army run

r Jan

Savell

Over two thousand runners took part in the DB Draught Around The Mountain Relay on Saturday. The race was run in excellent conditions with a cool morning followed by light drizzle in the aftemoon. No accidents or medical problems were reported and organisers were very pleased with the courtesy of motorists. The race was won by the New Zealand Combined Services Harrier Team. They completed the 160 kilometre course in a record time of 9 hours and 26 minutes.

Only 47 of the 214 teams that entered were military ones. At the prizegiving Colonel Clive Sinclair stressed that the civilian support was what made the relay such a unique event. He commended the efforts of the school teams in particular. Teams of primary children from Waiouru and Woodlands School, Opotiki ran eight and 10 kilometre legs. Among the crowd of almost 3,000 who attended the prizegiving were many veterans of past relays. "The event is a complete fun weekend," said John Bell, DB Area representative who has been involved with the race since the DB Draught sponsorship began 16 years ago. "The army can provide the facilities to accommodate everyone together at the after-match function. Great comradeship develops, tremendous friendships are made between team members who come back again and again to compete next year. Here tonight are two and a half thousand people who are going to really enjoy themselves!" The race was run in four grades. Spot prizes were awarded in the social grades. Prizewinners (and times) for the other three grades were as follows: Open; 1st New Zealand Combined Services Harrier Team 9.25.48, 2nd Wellington Helmets and Snuffies 9.29.27, 3rd The Lemonade Sippers 9.29.30. Composite; 1st Juet Suckers 10.11.15, 2nd Correspondence School Striders 10.44.43, 3rd Australian Defence Force Harrier Team 1 10.46.05. Veterans; 1st Waiheke Pacemakers 10.52.11, 2nd Rotorua Hash House Harriers 1 1 .50.45, 3rd South Wairarapa Working Man's Club 12.17.09.
