Pataka gets new home

The pataka sited at the old Karioi Forest Service Headquarters on State Highway 49 between Ohakune and Waiouru is about to move. The pataka was previously maintained by the Forest Service but when Winstones bought the cutting rights to Karioi forest they expressed a wish to discontinue the upkeep of the pataka. Winstones contacted Kaumatua Tukino Bates, who is associated with the pataka through his connections to the old pa Whakahi and generously offered to remove the pataka to the site of his choice. Mr Bates offered the taonga to Tirorangi Pa and, after months of koreno, site preparation and lialson between Winstones, Ohakune Engineering and the Tirorangi Pa committee the pataka is ready to move.
