Crafty meeting
Returning, after a post-exhibition breather to the theme of utilizing local wood-pulp, members of Waimarino Art and Crafts Society were treated to not one but two demonstrations of how to 'further process' paper. During the morning, Keith Harford of Raetihi made the art of screenprinting look easy as he developed an exciting two-colour design before an attentive audience. Under his expert tuition, members then tried their hand at reproducing their own prints. Stimulated by this success, an animated luncheon followed, during which we gleaned that
Keith, bom in Carterton, son of a police officer, spent his school-days and several years as a professional screenprinter in Wellington where he developed the restrained artistry so much admired by society members. Amongst community projects with which Mr Harford has been involved since moving to this District seventeen years ago, the impressive lamp-post hangings for last year's snow festival have brought most fame. Our District is fortunate to have such talent so freely and cheerfully available. Member's Tum to page 4

From page 3 thanks also went to Alison Thomas of Pokaka for her afterlunch demonstration of how to use marbling dyes to create random patterns on both ordinary manufactured and hand-crafted note papers. Marbling dyes are now a priority on the society's shopping list. Next scheduled meet is 27 November but members wishing to experiment, using the screenprinting equipment and
inks already in the society's possession to make Christmas cards, please contact key-holder to arrange interim working days.
