Waimarino stock prices improve

by DavidoftheRIC Buoyant prices, stock in good order and farmers eager to replace stock marked the two major saies in the Waimarino area last week, particu-

larly that held on the 22 October at the Raetihi stockyards in Seddon Street. "Stock from the Waimarino is popular with out-of-town buy-

ers," said Bernice Frost of Waimarino Livestock, "because it's usually in good condition and travels well." Even with the region's recent poor weather, as it was on the day of the Raetihi sale, the animals on offer were generally in good condition, although the lack of feed did have an effect on the yearling heifers, which were very slow to sell. The previous day's sale at Te Rimu Station in Kaitieki produced a good turnout of works buyers of hoggets and farmers from Hawkes Bay for both cattle and sheep. Very firm prices for wether hoggets were seen, with a good line of 399 selling for $5.70 each. Lines of mixed-age cattle went for a top price of $672, and 2-year-old heifers went for as much as $550. The major sale at Raetihi on Thursday saw buyers from Feilding and the Manawatu, Taihape, Levin and Taranaki. Stock on offer saw steady bidding and although the rain set in, buyers were

not discouraged and paid between $49-$51 for wether hoggets, and 2-year-old cattle sold well with bulls in this age range fetching $730, yearling cattle did move but a line of McGregor's 3-year-old bullocks were passed in.

The general verdcit was that it was probably the best sale for quite some time, the harsh winter probably helping saies for replacement herds. Overall, buyers and sellers were satisfied with the condition and prices of beasts.
