Good start to trout season

The 1992-93 fishing season started on 1 October this year.. That means new fishing licences and the expectation of yet another year of a sport that all the family can enjoy. That also means that for the next 274 days, any person can fish for trout anywhere in New Zealand except Taupo and Rotorua fishing districts with the Taranaki Fish and Game Council licence.

The opening four days of the season were fine and the rivers were in very good condition. On the opening weekend, 3 & 4 October, those who fishcd the Manganui-a-Tc-Ao River were very successful, one angler on the Saturday hooking 11 fish but only landing three, another caught five for the week-end but only kept two. Air temperatures are still very low and there will not be any

good evening rises until warmer weather arrives. Two hundred 2 -year - old fish, costing $2.50 each, have been released into Ohakune Lake. This year they are bigger than previous years so some good sport is expected for children. The lake is ideal for parcnts to get the boat out of the shed and take their kids out for a first taste of fishing. "Don't forget to take your kid's friends who may not have parents who have the facilities or the opportunity to take them too," said game council representative

Harry Brown. There are two cups, one for a senior and one junior, which are awarded each year for the heaviest trout caught by local an-

glers in the Ruapehu Fish and Game Club district. Contact Ron Walkley, Snow Brannigan, Chris Bright or Harry Brown for weight check.
