A recent spate oi accidents causing spinal injuries have seen the Palmerston North-bound helicopter air ambulance make frequent visits to the area, particularly the Raetihi recreation ground. On Saturday 17 October, a car accident at the Makatoke Viaduct resulted in the driver suffering a serious neck injury and the passenger receiving lower back injuries. The patient was transferred to the spinal care unit at Wanganui Basc Hospital. On Sunday 18 October an 11-year-old girl was injured in a fall at Ohakune. The type of injury suffered required the use of the helicopter to take her to Palmerston North Hospital for specialist treatment. Again, on Sunday 18 October, the Raetihi Fire Brigade were called to standby to provide field marking lights for the rescue helicopter to uplift a patient with a severe neck injury to Wanganui Base Hospital at around midnight. On this occasion, the helicopter arrived within a few minutes of the call, as opposed to the several hours wait on a previous occasion. The Waimarino Rescue helicopter was not called to these incidents bccausc they involved serious spinal injuries.
