Public welcome at Tokaanu power station
Visitors to the Central Plateau now have another reason to come to the region and extend their stay among the mountains, lakes and rivers all of which play a major role in this new attraction.
The Tokaanu Hydro Power Station - which depends on all of these natural features of the region for its electricity generation - is now open to the public • Previously only visits from schools and other
specific groups were encouraged but since May of last year, visits by the general public have been actively promoted though not widely publicised. Nevertheless, some 1500-2000 people now
visit the facility each month with daily averages of 40-50 though numbers have been as low as four and as high as 250 depending on the day, the weather and the time of year. Joining other such local attractions as the skifields, the Tokaanu thermal area and hot pools, Lake Taupo, the Tongariro Trout Hatchery, the Tokaanu Hydro Power Station is geared to cope with the same daily and seasonal fluctuations. Visiting hours are from 10am to 3.30pm with each guided tour - which includes a video presentation - taking about 50 minutes.
