Karaoke brings out the talent
"Karaoke has brought some really talented people out of the woodwork" said Mrs Elaine Vine, one of the four judges for the Waiouru RSA's Karaoke competition held last week. "Before karaoke these people didn't have a chance to sing. You can't just go up to a band and try it out. The talent we've seen here has been amazing. They give it their all - overwhelming." The competition, with a first prize of $800, attracted entrants from Taumarunui to Taihape. Thirty three entrants were
whittled down to 16 for a final on Saturday night. Ten of these were selected as semi-finalists and five prizewinners were chosen. Contestants had to choose a different song for each performance. The variety of entertainment provided was popular with patrons. Doors had to be closed at 9pm when the RSA was full. Another innovation was impromptu performances by each of the four judges. "It was a bit of a surprise for them but it went across like magic. Each of the judges were required to perform,"
Manager for RSA, Willie Walker said. Taking their turn gave the judges a new appreciation of the skill required. All agreed that the standard of the entries was much higher than last year. Contestants were judged on presentation, personality and voice. Taihape residents took first and second prizes. Winner was Arianna Hansen, Marie O'Leary came second. Charmaine Ratima from Waiouru took third prize. Last year's winner, Priscilla Richards from Ohakune came fourth.
