160kph Desert Rd speedsters caught
BY
CONSTABLE PETER
THOMAS
A fairly routine period with most of our efforts being directed towards some incredibly high speeds on the Desert Road. During October we stopped 130 motorists exceeding the speed limit. Six vehicles were
checked travelling in excess of 100 miles per hour (160 K.P.H.). This rate of speed is a nonsense, and the Waiouru Hawk Radar is working overtime in an attempt to eliminate this major problem on our patch. Remember: Three speeding tickets and your
drivers licence is history. • In line with the National Campaign on Seat Belts, we have now issued all our 'Warning Notices' and, on the positive side, all our balloons and keyrings to 'belted in' occupants. Now, we are into the 'firm
approach' phase, and will be issuing infringement notices to all unrestrained drivers and passengers. • An unruly passenger was ejected from an Inter-City bus in Waiouru last week. We had to escort him from the bus and detain him for a 'cooling down' period, before allowing him to continue his travels. I don't believe he was given a refund of his bus fare. • Police Recruiting
Officer, Sergeant Graeme Peters will be in Waiouru on 27 October. Anyone wishing to have a chat with him is advised to contact us at the Waiouru Police Station. • It is becoming obvious that a number of firearms licence holders are not fulfilling their obligations in advising Police of changes of address. A reminder, you must advise in writing your nearest Police station within 30 days of any change of address, or, your firearms licence becomes invalid. • We have had a wallet handed onto us. If anyone knows a young lady named Sylvia Moore, could you put us in touch with her so that we may return this property. • The New Zealand Police Association handbook "Child Safety" has been issued via the Waiouru Primary School. We have some copies available at the station should any parents or care-givers wish to obtain one. It is an excellent publication with heaps of tips and discussion points for any concerned adults to share with children. • Constable Chris Scales, who is enjoying
a spell of leave currently, displayed his conservational concerns last week, when he returned a good-sized quality trout to Lake Moawhango.
Unfortunately, he hadn't caught it himself. However, I suppose the urge to conscrve our I wildlife can be quite ' strong.
