Close voting for Ruapehu election
Voting was close for the Waimarino Ward councillor positions in Saturday's local govemment elections. Winning seats were John Compton with 865 votes, Ellen Gould (799) and Bob Peck (793). Missing out was Winston Oliver who polled 760 votes. In Waiouru Bobby Vine and Sue Rodger retained their council seats, winning 344 and 198 votes respectively. Missing out were Colin Drylie (121 votes) and Murray Fitchett (100). First term chairman of the Waimarino Community Board Colin Webb topped the poll for the board with 899 votes. Also elected were Alf Alabaster (836 votes), Ben Goddard (809), John Compton (802), Winston Oliver (720), and Ray Berry (703). Missing out for the board were: Ron Burrows (501), Peter Bishop (478), Peter Feickert
(317) and Te Uta (Bubs) Hibbard (276). National Park's Ken Malcolm lost his seat with the election of Anthony Hawkins who took 235 votes. Eddie Turley retained his seat (155 votes). Lloyd Horn (119 votes) missed out on a seat. Ohura Ward also saw sitting member Bill Penny ousted, gaining 339 votes while William Morrissey (405) and Joe Murphy (382) took the seats. Stuart Shaw, who had considered standing down prior to this election, topped the poll in Taumarunui, winning 2104 votes. Others elected were Weston Kirton (1972), Graeme Cosford (1747) and newcomers June Baker (1460) and Irene Dempsey (1330). Missing out were Brian Carran (1306), Terry Podmore (975) Robbie Campbell (796) and Roderick Miller (569).
