Week 5: Monday 12 - One and a half hours, flat terrain and medium gears, easy pace, Parapara Road. Tuesday 13 - Two hours, hilly terrain, vary your gears to suit and go 90% effort for one hour and easy on low gear for the second hour. Wednesday 14 - Rest day or other activities. Thursday 15 - One and a half hours, undulating terrain, medium gears, ride at 90% effort for 20 minutes in the middle of the ride, say Warrengate circuit. Friday 16 - Easy one hour ride or rest day. Saturday 17 - Club race starts at Talbot Street, Wanganui 1.30pm, 40km. Sunday 18 - Two and a half to three hour group ride. Points • Investing in a pair of cycling shoes would be worthwhile at this stage, they have very stiff soles to transmit power and prevent the soles of your feet from getting sore. Also they will have cleats on the bottom which allows you to pull on your pedals, a distinct advantage when riding up-hill. • Ensure you have good padded handle-bar tape on your handle bars to avoid getting sore wrists and arms through vibration. • You should be starting to feel fit now and ready for the biggest two weeks of the programme, weeks 6 and 8. As your rides have got longer you could do with having 'Exceed 'fluid and energy replacement drink in your bottle.
