Polluted Whangaehu?

• In a recent Bulletin I read in the article about the KCEPB's power project the statement "... the heav ily polluted Whangaehu River ...". In my understanding: the Whangaehu River finds its source at the Crater Lake on Mt Ruapehu; it does at this stage contain sulphur; all the fresh water tributaries that would naturally feed this main stream and dilute it, are fresh water; they are however diverted by Electricorp ' s Tongariro Power Scheme; the only source of pollution is the discharge from Winstone's Pulp Mill. The Whangaehu River was once used for therapeutic bathing. In fact the Karioi School used to visit the Whangaehu on a regular basis in the summer, under the direction of the school nurse, for its curative properties. And once, stock even used to drink the water.
