RTs for Ruapehu

A mobile radio telephone system with a transmitter - receiver station on Mts Tuhua and Hukuroa is to be set up by the Ruapehu District Council. The cost of the FM "E" band channel RT system is estimated at $11,805 per year, plus one-off installation costs of about $28,000

plus general maintenance. An alternative system using cellphones would cost $53,280 per year to operate and would provide a much more limited coverage, the council heard. The council already operates 1 5 cellphones for its technical, regulatory and corporate services, and the mayor.

Council officers assured councillors that workers who don't need RTs won't be issued with them. "The general manager is very careful to see that no money is spent on 'toys'," said finance director Chris Ryan. He said RTs led to more effective use of staff through better communications.
