Commencement of the first stage of the Grand Chateau hotel's upgrade is now dependent only on the approval of its owners. "We expect the replacement of carpets and drapes and re-upholster-ing of furniture in the Ngauruhoe lounge to start within four weeks," manager Chris Griffin said. Chateau management are submitting a proposal to the Conservation
Board next month detailing development it wants to make to the hotel and surrounding buildings but it doesn't need approval for the first stage alterations. Mr Griffin said he spoke to Prime Minister Jim Bolger at the opening of the Tongariro Visitor's Centre's new audio visual unit last week. "He was very favourable about the upgrading." The garage opposite
the Chateau, owned by the same people that own the hotel - Kah NZ Ltd - has had its lease extended to the end of January next year. The garage was being leased on a month by month basis pending the opinion of the Conservation Board on the ice skating rink proposal for the building which the garage currently occupies.
