Tangiwai accident kills Raetihi girl
An accident at Tangiwai on Wednesday resulted in the death of a young Raetihi girl. Eight year old Rebecca Ann Marshall suffered severe injuries after being hit by a car. Waiouru Police Constable Peter Thomas said the girl and her mother were travelling towards Ohakune to visit the girl's father who was working in a roadside field at Tangiwai. They parked their car on the left hand side of the road. The girl got out on the driver's side of the car and waited for a truck, heading towards Ohakune, to pass before crossing the road. Mr Thomas said the truck obscured an oncoming car, travelling towards Waiouru, and the girl ran out in front of it. She was flown to Palmerston North Hospital suffering severe injuries but died the next day. Mr Thomas said this incident highlighted the fact that more time needed to be spent on educating children about road safety.
