Accident-filled Waiouru week

• We've had another disastrous week on the roads with most accidents attended being injury related ones. We also attended a tragic fatal accident last Wednesday, when 8-year-old Rebecca Marshall from Raetihi was

killed after stepping in front of a vehicle on the Ohakune Road just out of Waiouru. She was flown from the scene, but unfortunately did not survive her injuries. On behalf of ourselves and the Ohakune Police, we extend our sympathies to Rebecca's family and friends. • A Hamilton man had a lucky escape after his south-bound vehicle left the road at Dump Hill north of Waiouru, crossed the road and rolled several times down into a creek. He was taken to hospital with minor injuries. • Early Saturday morning a car with four occupants lost control in icy conditions at Mulvays corner, also rolling and coming to rest down a bank. The driver was taken to hospital with moderate injuries. Moments after that scene was cleared, another north-bound vehicle lost control in the same place and collided into the bank. The passenger in the front seat was thrown into the

rested for the same offence, with one also facing a disqualified driving charge. • Ambulance and Police attended an incident on the Desert Road where a man collapsed behind the wheel of his car. He was taken to hospital but was not thought to be in a serious condition. • A few people have been growled at over the last two weeks about expired registrations and Warrant of Fitness's. I warned last column that no registrations or WOF, no insurance if you have an accident. No more growlings. Please get them attended to". An in-

stant fine for no registration is $200 and for no WOF, $150. During September, there is also a campaign to enforce intersection behaviour. Watch those stop signs and give-way signs. If you do happen to be issued a traffic infringement notice for some misdemeanour, the fines can be paid at most police stations, but not Waiouru. We don't have the facilities to handle cash. (I'm sure no Waiouru resident will find themselves in that position!). • Hope you all had a great break, kids are back at school, sighs of relief all round, have a safe week.
