Waiouru top in netball
By By Jan Savell The Army Training Group (ATG) retained their title at the Inter-re-gional Netball Tournament held in Waiouru last week, despite a strong challenge by the Central Region team. The Central Region team was captained by LCpl Tina Pomana, and included L/Cpl Waiheke Murray, player of the tournament. L/Cpl Murray was the only soldier to win selection to the combined services team chosen after the inter-services netball competition hosted by the Navy at Tamaki the week before. After three days of competition Central were ahead by one point and this meant they would meet ATG in the final played on Thursday. "The final was a good clean game" said ATG captain Pte Teresa Svenson. Central started slowly and ATG raced
away to a 10 point lead in the early stages. As the game progressed Central clawed this back to a game which could have gone either way in the last quarter. We just hung on in that final quarter. Some errors by the oppositition made the difference. What really
helped the most was the support. The sound and the atmosphere in the gymnasium was incredible," said Pte Svenson. The final score was 44:39. Placings for the tournament were 1st ATG, 2nd Central, 3rd Northern, 4th Wellington and 5th
Southern. The Army team was chosen at the end of the tournament. Two Waiouru players were included in the team which will compete at the Kurungaituku Tournament in September. Pte Teresa Svenson and
Sgt Sharon Crack will play for the Army in Rotorua with four Waiouru players; Sgt Liz Bakker, Dvr Tina Colvin, 2Lt Helen Cooper and Dvr Toni Larkin travelling with the team as reserves. A trip to compete in Rarotonga is planned for next vear.
