Whakapapa racing starts
The North Island Ski Racing Calendar finally got underway at Whakapapa on Friday 4 September with the Fresh-Up Slalom. The race which had been postponed from 8 August, was held in variable conditions in the Te Heu Heu Valley. In the womens event Annika Haywood totally out-skied the field winning with a combined time nearly 8.5 seconds faster than second placegetter Monique Ritchie.
Angela Huppert, in her first year as a competitive racer skied exceptionally well to take third place. The mens event was a close affair between old rivals Chris Mosaed and Ben Tidswell. Chris put in the fastest run of the day on his second run to pip Ben by .05 seconds overall. These two racers were really in a class of their own finishing over 7.5 seconds ahead of the third place-getter Richard Caudwell. Whakapapa head coach, Jim Davis, said that while the stars Tidswell and Mosaed dominated the race two young skiers, 15 year-old Todd Haywood and 16 year-old Ewan Howden who finished 4th and 5 th respectively, showed they have the potential to challenge in the fu ture.
