Pipiriki lights

The council has been asked to price installing one extra street light for Pipiriki, following a request from the Department of Conservation (DoC) for five street lights in the town. At the Waimarino Community Board meeting last week a a letter was presented from DoC field centre manager John Lythgoe, expressing concern that a proposal to install nine street lights in the village did not allow for any in areas of concern to DoC.

Mr Lythgoe said ongoing vandalism in the village was of great concern, especially on DoC facilities. "There was never any intention to have a brilliantly lit urban area in Pipiriki," said Doug Bennett. "It was the safety aspect that we were concerned with." "DoC are basically asking for lights for their own security purposes," said Wjnston Oliver. "If they (DoC) want them then they can pay for them," said Mr Bennett.
