Tongariro history display opens
The Whakapapa Visitors Centre's new auditorium audio visual and ski history museum was opened by Prime Minister Jim Bolger on Saturday. More than 200 people attended the opening, including many representatives of the Tuwharetoa and Upper Whanganui
tribes who played a large part in the production of the audio visual display. The opening marked the completion of a project to improve facilities at the centre which began in 1986. The audio visual is an impressive 26 minute - display which is the largest and most complex
produced to date by L)o(J's Nelson Design Centre. It tells the story of Tongariro National Park, and how its three mountain peaks were gifted in 1887 by Ngati Tuwharetoa chief Te Heuheu to all New ■ Zealanders. The ski history museum portrays the history
ot sknng on Mt. Kuapehu and features donated clothing and equipment from the 1930's to the present day. Also present at the opening were United States Ambassador to New Zealand Della Newman and Conservation Minister Denis Marshall.
