Cold weather and increased traffic loads are causing Ohakune roads to chip and gravel to mound irito potentially hazardous drifts. At the intersection of Thames Street and Mangawhero Terrace some motorists swerve into the oncoming lane to avoid skidding in the large pile of loose chips which has built up. Don Sattler, Ruapehu District Council's Area Engineer South, said the company who originally resealed the intersection back in February are to repair it soon. He said this chipping problem had happened in a number of areas around the country this year. Another trouble spot is the intersection of Miro and Shannon Streets. Ohakune Traffic Officer Ian Harrison says that no accidents have happened at these areas yet.
