Waiouru Police File: take care on icy roads

BY WAIOURU POUCE CONSTABLE

CHRIS

SCALES

• It has been an absolutely hectic time for us and other emergency services in the last month attending accidents too numerous to mention. They have ranged from a tragic fatality to serious injuries, and some very lucky escapes. Most of these accidents have been caused bv the wintry conditions

we are experiencing at the moment - a combination of speed and not respecting the conditions. • The loss of power to Waiouru on Thursday night was the result of two vehicles leaving the road just south of Irirangi. One vehicle with five occupants lost control and rolled down a bank colliding with a lamp post. Luckily they were only shaken up. • We have been very

busy with the type of driver who refuses to believe that the Desert Road should be closed, or who can't read signs, and ventures onto the road. They cannot understand why the policeman, or roadman Stu Caisley get grumpy at them when they are called out to get them out of the snow. Like the car load of people happily building snowmen in absolute blizzard conditions on the Desert Road the other

night, when the road was closed. Amazing - obviously from the city. Please take care when driving around the area. • We have noticed a lot of vehicles with expired registrations or warrants of fitness. Please attended to them. If you have an accident, no WOF or registration, then your face no insurance payout. On 20 August a large burglary occurred at the Rugby Club rooms in

which over $8000 of alcohol and cigarettes were taken. It is believed that two or more persons were responsible, and a ute or truck would have been used. From the amount of alcohol taken including kegs, it would have taken some time. If you saw anything suspicious, or have heard any gossip, have any information at all, about this offence, please let us know, confidentially if you wish.

This is the third time that the club rooms have been broken into. We want to stop it happening again. • There have been reports of mail and parcels being taken from letter boxes. Please beware. • The Cold Kiwi motorcycle rally gets underway this weekend. No need to harp on about being extra vigilant about security, especially if you are going away for the school holi-

days. The event has been well organised and will be well controlled, so we don't expect any problems. All three of us will be on duty over the weekend, as well as some Taihape staff • Take care on the roads if you are going away for the school holidays, have a great time and return safely.
