Race on for Ruapehu Council places
With nominations closed for the Ruapehu District elections, the race is now on for candidates to win support for the various positions available. Fifty nominations have been received for the 39 positions available. Mayor Garrick Workman's nomination is unopposed after T aumarunui Councillor Don Lawson withdrew his nomination yesterday. Waimarino ward's three councillor positions are to be contested by Ohakune Primary School teacher Ellen Gould, stock & station store manager John Compton from Raetihi, Ruatiti farmer Winston Oliver and retired minister Bob Peck, from Raetihi who is a past mayor of Raetihi. Waiouru' s present-
councillors Bobby Vine and Sue Rodger are challenged by milkman Murray Fitchett and Colin Drylie. National Park ward councillors Ken Malcolm and Eddie Turley are challenged by Anthony Hawkins and Lloyd Horn. There is to be a battle
for places on the Waimarino Community Board, with 10 standing for six places. All other boards face shortfalls in numbers of candidates. Present board members Colin Webb, Winston Oliver, Ben Goddard and John Compton are challenged
by Alf Alabaster, Ray Berry, Peter Bishop, Ron Burrows, Peter Feickert, and Te Uta (Bubs) Hibbard. Joining Colin Drylie and Murray Fitchett on the Waiouru Community Board will be Myrtle Gunn and Peter Pitts. Joining Mabel
Mathieson and Michael Plowman on the National Park Community Board will be Noel Coogan, Michael Petersen and Kelvin Wiggins. Another big contest in the district will be for Taumarunui's five places on council, with 10 candidates nominated.
