Soccer team ends top season

Ruapehu played their final match of the season on Saturday when they played a catch-up match,

previously postponed, against Wanganui High School under 17's. With the league already comfortably won it was a matter of improving on their 1-1 draw in their previous encounter. An early goal by Avinesh Sharma sent them ori track. Brother

Nilesh followed shortly after and a further goal by Aeneas O'Sullivan saw Ruapehu with a comfortable 3-0 lead at the half, playing into a strong wind. O'Sullivan scored again in the second half and captain Geoff Pitts scored the goal of the

match after a long probing run through the midfield. He was also awarded player of the match. Final score Ruapehu 5, Wanganui High School 0. Ruapehu was presented with the Wanganui Football Association Under 17 trophy and pro-

vided with a complimentary lunch after the game and were then able to watch Wanganui Athletic playing Wellington Olympic in a Central League premier match before retuming home. Team coach John Laurenson said he was pleased with the performance and commitment shown by the team throughout the season. It is the first time he can recall finishing a season with the same 15 squad members he started with, with no major injuries throughout.
