Arrests follow theft spree
• Five people were arrested on the weekend after a series of thefts in Ohakune. Early on Friday moming a railway wagon at Ohakune Junction Railway Station was broken into and $2000 worth of goods, including bedding, foodstuffs and a carton of glue were stolen. Later a quantity of bread was stolen from a bread truck parked in Miro Street, Ohakune. Later, the Parklands Dairy was entered and a quantity of confectionery taken. A 29-year-old Raetihi man, a 19-year-old Ohakune man and an 18 year-old Raetihi woman will appear in the Ohakune. District Court on 10 September. Two 16-year-old females were referred to the youth aid section of Social Welfare. • On Saturday evening a residence in Goldfinch Street was burgled and a combination TV-VCR unit taken. • A car parked outside the Ohakune Hotel was broken into Wednesday night - Thursday morning and two quality ski jackets stolen. • The same night a farm shed in Kopuru tuku Road was entered and three horse blankets and a stock saddle were stolen. • The rear window of a car parked near Piper's Kings Court was smashed on Thursday night - Friday moming. Thieves stole four car seat covers, a car radio, a pair of ski boots, a ski jacket and two pairs of sports shoes. • Recent crime figures for Ohakune show that of 181 recent burglaries, one was a permanent residence and the rest were holiday homes. Locals should not be relieved however, advises Police sergeant Bob Evans. He said the statistics would affect everyone's insurance premiums, regardless of where they fell.
