Pub-goers test grey matter

BY

JAN

SAVELL

What command did the Captains of the Mississippi River Boats give when they wanted their crews to conduct river soundings? This is just one of the questions posed to contestants in the pub trivia competition that concluded on Tuesday night. Manager of the Oasis Hotel, Willie Mclntyre, organised the competition and provided prizes totalling over $1500. "We want to promote the pub as more than a place for booze. It is a community facility," said Mr Mclntyre. Participants were encouraged to dress in costumes to match weekly themes. Thirteen teams competed for 10 weeks. "There's a great atmosphere," said Richard Taylor, the man responsible for the 600 questions used. Weekly first prizes of $100 meant that the top teams had already won quite a bit of money. The grand prize of $400 was to be donated to the winner's

choice of charity. 'Three Bushies and a Piglet' were the team that won this honour. Christine and Alan Hood, "Crook" Trembath and Larry Cummings proved that taking a dictionary when they go hunting was the key to trivia success. Some of the other competitors unkindly pointed out that it may have had more to do with team manager, Kaye Trembath, helping out with the scoring! The team are as yet undecided on the charity that will benefit from their brainwork. Second-place getters were 'Ballcock And Nipples' who received a set of sweatshirts, with the Mutton Daggers picking up $100 for their third placing. They are already forming teams for Pub Pictionary which will be the next Tuesday night entertainment. And the answer to that question?. 'By the mark twain', of course!
