Petty reason for closure

• Over the past 17 years I cannot recall an instance when the Parapara Road was closed to through traffic. The Ministry of Works staff maintained the road and kept it open. Yes, it was open in all weather! The Chronicle (August 12) published an article 'Slip-clearing delay'. This told us of a jurisdictional issue involving Works Maintenance and Construction of Wanganui and the roading business unit of the Ruapehu District Council. As reported: "A five-hour delay in clearing a slip on the Parapara highway yesterday was apparently due to the road maintenance being divided between two contractors". It is high time that Transit New Zealand and the two contractors involved were advised of the serious effect caused by closure of this route, the main route to our base hospital. I am unimpressed by the standard of day-to-day maintenance and appalled that this route could be closed for such a petty reason. It might be of in-

terest that at about the same time the roads to Taumarunui and between Taihape and Hunterville were closed as well. So much for the benefits of 'private enterprise'.
