Firemen teach fire safety

Teaching fire safety was the aim of a recent visit by Raetihi School's junior classes to the fire

station. On Wednesday 29 July the junior classes visited the Raetihi fire station

where members of the volunteer brigade brought them to full attention as education officer John

Compton demonstrated the 'stop, drop and roll' technique for avoiding fire injury. During the day John took the four classes through correct dialing procedure, and relaying the right information to the 111 emergency services. It was evident during the lesson that some children are confusing this service with the American emergency service number, made public through the television programme that screens Tuesday nights.

Brigade members emphasised the importance of crawling beneath smoke to search and survive in a burning building. They used cartoons and colouring-in projects to get this message across To let the children become familiar with fire fighters in action, brigade members demonstrated the crawling technique wearing breathing apparatus. On Friday the new entrant pupils had a shared lunch based on healthy eating.with help from Dental Nurse Kate Lourie.
