Blackout

A major power blackout occurred on Sunday evening which affected the whole area between Hunterville in the south and Taumarunui in the north. Residents in the Taihape, Waiouru, Ohakune, Raetihi and National Park/Whakapapa areas found their homes plunged into

darkness without warning at 7.16pm. The fault was weatherrelated - possibly a slip in the Hunterville area - which affected the main transmission lines from Bunnythorpe, after continuous rain and high winds throughout the past few days. Power was restored 30 minutes later.
