Two maybe three Waimarino Councillors to stand down
With nominations now open for Ruapehu District elections, sitting members are considering their options. Ruapehu mayor Garrick Workman has said he will be standing for mayor again, and Taumarunui councillor Don Lawson has indicated he is considering standing for mayor. 'Tm not unhappy with the way things are at present, but I've been asked to consider it," he said. Councillor Ellen Gould said she has considered not standing, but
that she is concerned that there could be no women candidates if she doesn't. "The majority of councillors are white, middle class, middle aged males who are self employed," she said. "There needs to be a mix." Waimarino councillor Doug Bennett is not standing this year. He said he has had more than 20 years in local government and it was time to take a break. Councillor Bill Peach is not standing again.

John Compton said he was concerned that there would be no continuity on council if the present three did not stand. Bruce Thompson said he is not going to stand, having spent several years in local government. Chairman Colin Webb said he was considering the matter, as did Ben Goddard. He said his main aim was to see the Ohakune water project through.
