Plan to stop shop thefts

BY

JAN SAVELL

The Army Garrison Institute (AGI) Superette at Waiouru is to be redesigned following the discovery of a serious shoplifting problem in the store. A secret security camera, used in one area of the shop for seven days, revealed over $400 worth of shoplifting. "The problem is widespread" said manager John Peden. "We saw school children

slipping chocolate bars up their sleeves, filling plastic bags with confectionery and even using the security mirrors to check on the whereabouts of our staff." "And it wasn't just school children - several adults and even a preschooler can be seen on the film. I suspected we had a problem but this is -worse than what I thought by a country mile". The counter area of the shop is to be redesigned

with inwards and outwards doors to stop lingering when purchases are completed. The camera will continue to be used and extra security measures are to be in place in time for the August school holidays. "We're working closely with the civilian police on this. I've decided to use this first video for staff training but from now on we will be referring all offenders straight to the police."
