POLICE FILE

• Last week police located a Holden Berlina car stolen from Kaitaia in September 1990 on a farm property at Makakahi, near Raetihi. Parts of the car had been removed, the engine was not operable, but the body was in good order. Police have not yet arrested anyone in connection with the theft, but enquiries are continuing. • The Ohakune Fire Station was broken into on Thursday morning. Police Sergeant Bob Evans said the thieves were disturbed by firemen before anything was taken. Four people were spoken to near the scene and enquiries are continuing. • Two people have been warned following a police search in Ohakune on Wednesday morning. A small amount of cannabis and cannabis utensils were discovered at the Ruapehu Road address. • A local man was charged with dangerous driving after side-swiping a police car, then trying to escape on Saturday night. Police chased the man until he lost control on Thames Street ramming the police car twice. No one was injured and the crash resulted only in minor damage. The 30-year old man was also charged with driving with an excess breath alcohol level. • Two youths had a narrow escape after their car became stuck on the railway line at Ohakune early Sunday morning. Police Sergeant Bob Evans said the pair had driven about 750 metres down a track beside the railway line when they reached a barrier. They tried to tum around on the narrow track and found themselves stranded. They were spotted by police who alerted the rail authorities to suspend operations until the car could be towed off the track. The youths were not charged but let off with a warning. • Organisers of The Exponents concert are empty handed after a briefcase was stolen from their Ohakune lodgings early Sunday morning. The case, containing cash, airline tickets and other documents was left on the verandah after the organisers arrived home from the concert between 3.30 and 5.30am Enquiries are continuing. • Police are appealing to the public for information about a red Honda Prelude stolen from Arawa Street on Saturday night. The stolen car was later found crashed into a ditch on the comer of Raetihi and Smiths Roads. Ohakune police Sergeant Bob Evans said the offenders obviously spent quite a lot of time trying to get the car out. They then took a four-wheeled motorbike from a neighbouring farm and retumed to the ditched Honda Prelude. Mr Evans said the bike ran out of petrol by the substation on Raetihi Road so the offenders then broke into a car parked nearby smashing a window and damaging the ignition but failing to start it.
