Locals win ski jobs
Whakapapa and Turoa skifields have provided jobs for some 480 people this season and a large number of those are for locals. This is largely due to Turoa only advertising jobs through newspapers in the Turangi, Taupo, Taumarunui and southern Ruapehu areas and through the local New Zealand Employment Service. Applications were down 150 this year from last year's 600. Turoa staff co-ordina-tor Pam Lawrence said most local people were more interested in working whereas outsiders came for other reasons like skiing and the social life.
